Sofas & armchairs

To choose the right sofa for your living room, start by measuring the space and thinking about how you use the room every day. If the living room is small, a two-seat or three-seat sofa may be more practical. If you have a larger space or often entertain guests, a corner or modular sofa can offer more seating and greater flexibility.

Also consider whether you mainly use the sofa for relaxing, watching TV, chatting or even sleeping. A sofa-bed can be ideal for small homes or accommodating guests, while a sofa with a chaise longue offers more room to relax.

Style, fabric and colour complete your choice. Choose a sofa that suits the rest of your living room as well as your everyday life. This makes the space more comfortable, functional and welcoming.

You can design your living room or your ideal sofa yourself, completely free of charge.

The best fabric for a sofa depends on how you use the space and on your everyday needs. If the sofa is used every day by the whole family, it is worth choosing a fabric that is easy to clean and maintain. Sofas with removable and washable covers are a particularly practical choice, especially if there are children, pets or frequent use.

If you want a warmer and softer feel, a fabric sofa can make the living room more welcoming and comfortable. If you prefer a more timeless look or a more distinctive texture, you can also consider leather or coated fabric options, always according to your space’s care and usage needs.

It is also important to consider the colour and style of the fabric. A neutral colour adapts easily to different decorating choices, while a bolder colour can add character to the living room. You can combine the sofa with decorative cushions, cushion covers, covers and throws to change the look of the room easily.

To choose a sofa colour, start with the style of the living room and the colours already present in the space, such as the flooring, walls, rugs, curtains and other furniture. If you want a safe and timeless choice, neutral shades such as grey, beige, white, off-white or brown are easy to combine with different styles and can be refreshed simply with cushions, throws or rugs.

If you want the sofa to become the focal point of the living room, you can choose a bolder colour, such as green, blue, yellow or red, depending on your room’s palette. A colourful sofa can add character, especially when the rest of the room uses calmer tones.

Also consider everyday use. In homes with children, pets or very frequent use, medium or darker shades may be more practical. If you enjoy changing your décor, a neutral sofa gives you greater flexibility because you can alter the look of the living room with cushions, throws and decorative accessories.

To clean your sofa, start by removing dust, crumbs and hair with a vacuum cleaner, ideally using the special attachment for fabrics or upholstery. Carefully vacuum the seat, back, armrests and the areas between the cushions, where small objects and dust usually collect.

If the sofa has removable covers, check the care instructions before washing them. Many covers can be removed and cleaned more easily, which is particularly practical in homes with children, pets or heavy everyday use. If you have a sofa with removable covers, you can also explore sofa covers to choose the one that suits you and give your sofa a new lease of life. If your sofa does not have removable covers, you can refresh or protect it with covers and throws.

For local stains, use a clean white cloth with a little lukewarm water and mild soap, after first checking the product’s care instructions. Gently dab the stain without rubbing vigorously, so that it does not spread or damage the fabric. Allow the area to dry naturally in a well-ventilated space before using the sofa again.

Some sofas with non-removable covers have received a special easy-care treatment, which means that stains will not penetrate the fabric but remain on the surface, allowing you to wipe them away easily with a dry cloth.

To arrange throws on a corner sofa, start by deciding whether you want a neater or more relaxed result. For a cleaner look, spread the throw along the chaise longue or corner and let it fall naturally to one side. This protects the area used most often while creating a warmer feel in the room.

If you want a more effortless style, fold the throw loosely and place it over the armrest, back or corner section. On a larger corner sofa, you can use two throws in similar shades or different textures to break up the sofa’s volume and add more dimension.

Combine covers and throws with cushions in similar colours or textures for a more complete result. For example, a plain throw can be paired with patterned cushions, while a throw with a pronounced texture can serve as a subtle decorative touch on a more minimalist sofa.

You can place a throw on an armchair in different ways depending on the result you want. For a neater look, fold the throw lengthwise and place it over the back of the armchair, allowing it to fall evenly towards the seat or behind the backrest.

For a more relaxed and cosy result, let the throw fall naturally over one arm or one corner of the armchair. This works very well in a reading corner, especially when combined with a decorative cushion, a small side table and a floor lamp.

For armchairs with a bolder colour or pattern, choose a calmer throw that does not compete with the armchair’s style. By contrast, for a neutral armchair, you can choose a throw with colour, texture or pattern to add more warmth and personality to the room.
