IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad once famously said, “It’s difficult to do business with someone on an empty stomach.” We’ve been serving meatballs in our restaurants since 1985, and they’re on the menu at every IKEA store in the world. Today, one billion IKEA meatballs are enjoyed globally every year! We have a full meatball family including plant balls, chicken meatballs and veggie balls. Over the years, the meatball has become an IKEA icon, a proud example of traditional Swedish cooking and an instant taste of home for Swedes living abroad.
What's so Swedish about meatballs?
Meatballs are tasty, round, cute and a bit funny, and they can be varied in countless ways. Especially when eaten with mashed potatoes, cream sauce and lingonberry jam – the sweet-sour and salty flavour combo that makes them truly Swedish. These convenient, affordable crowd-pleasers were first mentioned in print in Sweden in Kajsa Warg’s (one of the best-known cooks in Swedish history) cookbook from 1754, and have slowly but steadily become part of both everyday meals and special occasion menus. Tuesday, August 23rd is national Meatball Day in Sweden – a great opportunity to highlight our Swedish heritage while also showcasing the entire IKEA ‘family of meatballs’, from meatballs to veggie balls to plant balls, and more.
